How to wash and care for crochet toys

Handmade crochet toys are made to be loved — and loved toys get grubby. With a little gentle care they'll stay soft and keep their shape for years.
Everyday cleaning: spot clean
For most marks, spot cleaning is all you need:
- Mix a few drops of mild soap into a bowl of cool water.
- Dip a soft cloth in, wring it out well, and dab the marked area. Don't scrub — it can fuzz the yarn.
- Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water to remove the soap.
- Press gently with a dry towel to soak up moisture.
Drying
Air dry flat, away from direct sunlight and heaters. Sunlight can fade colours, and heat can change the shape. Make sure the filling is completely dry inside before giving the toy back to a child.
What to avoid
- No machine washing. Agitation can stretch stitches and lump the filling.
- No tumble drying or ironing.
- Don't soak toys with wooden rings or metal parts — keep wood and metal as dry as possible.
- Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach.
Caring for wooden rattle rings
Wipe the wooden ring with a slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away. Never soak or put it in the dishwasher.
Keep toys looking their best
- Fluff them up by gently reshaping with your hands after cleaning.
- Store in a clean, dry place, out of direct sun.
- Check regularly for loose stitches or parts — especially on toys for babies. If something comes loose, set the toy aside until it's repaired.
