Are crochet toys safe for babies? A parent's checklist

10 Oct 2026 · 2 min read · Yarnimals studio, Indore

Crochet toys are soft, light and made with care — which is exactly why so many parents choose them for babies. But like any toy, some are better suited to little ones than others. Here's a simple checklist to use before you give one to a baby.

1. Look at the eyes and face

For babies, the safest faces are embroidered — stitched with yarn, so there's nothing hard to bite or pull off. Many toys use plastic safety eyes, which lock in place from the inside, but because they're small hard parts, toys with safety eyes are generally recommended for ages 3 and up.

At Yarnimals, our baby rattles have embroidered faces, while our dolls and keychains have safety eyes and are labelled for ages 3+.

2. Check for small or loose parts

Gently tug at ears, bows, flowers and other details. Everything should be firmly attached, with no loose buttons, beads, bells or long ribbons a baby could pull off or get tangled in.

3. Know what it's made of

Ask what yarn and filling are used. Cotton yarn is a popular choice for baby items because it's soft and breathable. Our toys are made with cotton yarn and polyester fibre filling, and our rattles have a natural beech-wood ring.

4. Choose the right size

Toys for babies should be too big to fit in the mouth, and light enough that they won't hurt if dropped on a little face.

5. Keep it clean

Babies put everything in their mouths, so clean toys regularly. For crochet, spot clean gently with mild soap and cool water and air dry flat — see our care guide for details.

6. Check it as it ages

Every few weeks, look for worn stitches, loose threads or thinning yarn. If anything looks loose, take the toy away until it's repaired.

7. Always supervise

No toy replaces a watchful grown-up. Supervise babies and young children during play, and keep toys out of the cot while baby sleeps.
